Junior girls football
Our junior girl footballers have had a mixed bag of luck with their recent games. Our first game saw us take on Pres, Headford in Bekan. Unfortunately, this could have been described as a lacklustre game on our side. It took a while for us to find our feet. Halftime saw us trail by 5 points to 3 points but still a chance to take this game from Pres’s clutches. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be with many efforts just not taking root. This was definitely a game, I am sure the girls will agree, that we left behind. We are confident in our girl’s ability and know that if things had just “clicked” like they have on other occasions, this outcome would have been different. The final score was Dunmore CS 10 points, Pres, Headford 2-9
Our next outing saw us take on Jesus and Mary secondary school, Gortnor Abbey in Crossmolina. Again we left the work for the second half and trailed by 4 points at halftime with the score 1-2 to 1-6 in their favour. A second-half team saw us take control of the game and dominate only allowing the opposition a solitary score in the second half – a goal, while we registered 4-1 ourselves. A much improved, energetic display from the first game and surely the tally could have been even greater had we converted our missed attempts. The final score was Dunmore CS 5-3, Gortnor Abbey 2-6.
Very promising stuff from our junior team, especially considering they are now in a higher division following on from their outstanding success last year in winning the Connacht final and reaching the all-Ireland final, being narrowly defeated by Presentation College, Kerry. They now have one game standing in their way to progressing. They face Glenamaddy next Thursday in Glenamaddy. A win may see them progress to the Connacht semi-finals, a loss would end their campaign. We wish them every success in their next game, best of luck girls!
A special word of thanks to Knightbuild for sponsoring a new set of jerseys for our ladies’ teams. The chosen design is the fabulous creation of leaving cert student Alicia Costello. The girls are thrilled with the jerseys and greatly appreciate the support and investment. We endeavour to do ye proud!
