Senior girl’s footballers off to a flying start
Our senior girl footballers have 2 wins securely under their belts. After a rocky start to the Abbey, Boyle game a few weeks ago away to Boyle, the girls soon found their rhythm. Half time saw us only a mere point ahead with plenty of football to play. The second half saw a surge of energy and the Dunmore CS play we are accustomed to seeing came to the fore leaving a shook Boyle in their wake, seeing us win the game by 12 points on a scoreline of Dunmore CS 9-12, Abbey, Boyle 4-14.
Yesterday saw us take on Presentation, Headford in less than ideal conditions in Headford. The rain had made its mark making the pitch very soft, easily marked and ultra slippery. Add to this the rain that restarted as we arrived which resulted in a slippery ball, with no bounce and turned this game into a real dog’s fight. Halftime saw us 4 goals to the good, but with those conditions, that ball could easily find its way into the back of the net in the glimpse of an eye and thus we remained still on edge. A quick goal by the opposition shortly after the half time throw in confirmed that we would need to battle to the end to ensure we retained victory. We responded in kind, and kept responding. A huge, heartfelt congratulations to the girls who took to the field today. They really took the challenge head on and worked very well as a team. There were countless turnovers, trojan defensive work from all over the field and a great support network among the girls. Was our game perfect, not quite- areas to work on alright, but we are proving a force to be reckoned with. Final score was Dunmore CS 5-12, Pres Headford 2-6
The talent on the team is immense and this can only come to light through teamwork rather than individual play, and this is something the girls continue to build on. Places on the team are highly competitive and contested, making management’s job very difficult, but we would not want it any other way! We hope this is only the start of a successful year for our girls.
Special thanks to Knightbuild for the sponsorship of our fabulous new jerseys, designed by LC student Alicia Costello, which took to the field in both our junior and senior games this week. The girls are looking very dapper indeed!
