Junior girl footballers reach Connacht final
On Friday, the junior girl footballers met Ursuline College, in a Connacht semi final in Swinford Amenity Park, and we were treated to a fantastic game! Both sides gave us an entertaining game; with fantastic defensive efforts, some superb scoring, some near misses, a penalty each, great supportive work and some phenomenal blocking and overturning.
Dunmore started the scoring and dominated most of the possession in the starting phases, securing their own kick-out and the majority of the oppositions, however, some efforts went begging and the scoreline at half time was 2-3 to 1-2 in our favour. We would have liked to be further ahead at this stage.
The Dunmore ladies came out of the starting block all guns blazing after half time and put the first few scores on the scoreboard from some excellent passages of play and teamwork. Great praise must be given to Ursuline college, who despite being 10 points down at one point, kept the pressure on and kept fighting until the bitter end. Our defensive skills were really put to the test as Ursuline kept running at us and fair play, we kept our head and put in some outstanding turnovers. A goal by Ursuline nearing the end of play put the game into dangerous territory- a one-score game and Ursuline were gunning for a goal. A point, when needed the most, by Megan Healy gave us that much needed buffer and breathing space. Intense pressure and maintenance of possession allowed us to see off the opposition and maintain a 4 point lead, winning the game 3-8 to 3-4.
This was a superb team effort with every player standing up to be counted and doing their bit. These ladies have now secured their place in a Connacht final, for the second year in a row! An amazing achievement and we wish them all the best in the final where they meet the winner of the semi-final between Presentation College, Headford and Carrick on Shannon Community school.
A big thank you to our sponsor Knightbuild, the new jerseys are certainly seeing results!
