To this end, the Library, in association with Poetry Ireland, organises and hosts an annual poetry speaking competition, Poetry Aloud.

Originally entitled Yeats Aloud, this competition first ran in 2006 to coincide with the launch of the Library's exhibition Yeats: The Life & Works of WB Yeats. The competition seeks entries from students attending post-primary schools on the island of Ireland.

Three of our students, Hannah O’Loughlin (Transition Year), Blaithin McWalters and Susie McGagh (6th years) travelled with their teacher Ms. Grehan to compete in the galway heat of the compeition held in St. Enda’s, Galway. A large amount of students participated in three different categories: Junior, Intermediate and Senior. Each student had to recite a required poem and then a poem of their own choice from different anthologies. It was a nervewrecking experience for the students as they had to memorise and recite their poems in front of the large crowd.

Congratulations to all students on their wonderful performnce on the day, Hannah was highly recommended and Blaithin will now go on to the All-Ireland semi-finals in Wesley college in Dublin. The preparations began a few weeks ago, when we decided what we, as a class would do for the project. It was decided that Captain McGovern, an Officer from the Irish Defence force, would be the guest speaker for the day.

It all started when were spilt into different committees, such as Set-up, Art, Note Takers, Questions, Welcome, Guidance and Contact groups. Once in our groups, work began preparing for the big day.

Finally the when the day came, we began to Set up the room for the Presentation for Captain McGovern, he arrived and was met by our Welcome committee. He was then given a brief guided tour of the school and once returned he began his presentation.

The presentation started by Captain McGovern giving us a short background of his life before he joined the Army, he showed us pictures of his deployment to Chad in Africa with the French Army. He began by telling us how he started off as a cadet .We were fascinated by the way he lived in Chad. After this he explained to the class about the different ranks in the army and how he came to be a captain in the Army. Finally he finished the presentation telling us about the training and activities at the army base training camp in the Curragh.

Once Captain McGovern was finished, the thank you committee thanked Captain McGovern for the very interesting talk and finished by presenting him with a card and a present to show our appreciation. The Class photographer Sean Ryder then took a picture of the class, our teacher Ms. McGovern and guest speaker.

We enjoyed the day very much and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved on the day.
